Below is a list of Porter County Career Center courses that include content related to human sexuality as part of their approved curriculum.
Instructional Materials Used
Each listed course uses age-appropriate, medically accurate instructional materials aligned with Indiana Code 20-30-5-13.
COSMETOLOGY
Textbook: Milady CIMA Cosmetology Online (Latest Digital Edition)
Topics Covered: Anatomy of the reproductive system, infection control, and prevention of communicable diseases, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and bloodborne pathogens.
Format: Online instructional modules, teacher-facilitated discussion, and digital assessments.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Textbook: Working with Young Children, 10th Edition – Judy Herr, Ed.D. (Online Textbook)
Topics Covered: Health, safety, and developmental guidance in early childhood education, including personal hygiene, illness prevention, child safety, healthy habits, family communication, and recognizing and responding to signs of neglect or abuse. Discussions are age-appropriate and focus on child well-being and protection.
Format: Lecture, discussion, and group activities centered on creating safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate learning environments for young children.
EDUCATION PROFESSIONS
Textbook: Working with Young Children, 9th Edition – Judy Herr (Goodheart-Willcox, 2020)
Topics Covered: Genetics and environmental influences on child development; developmental stages from prenatal through infancy; and typical growth patterns of the body and brain. Instruction also examines how environmental, cultural, and social factors—including religious background, sexual orientation, gender identity, culture, family structure, and economic status—affect the personal growth and development of children and adolescents. Discussions emphasize creating environments that promote healthy emotional and social development from prenatal stages through early childhood.
Format: Lecture, discussion, and class activities focused on understanding the relationship between developmental theory and real-world teaching experiences that support inclusive and healthy growth for all students.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
Textbook: Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 12th Edition
Topics Covered: Anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems, medical conditions and diseases that affect each system (including sexually transmitted diseases), and an overview of pregnancy and childbirth as part of emergency medical response training. Instruction focuses on recognizing and appropriately responding to reproductive emergencies within the scope of EMT practice.
Format: Lecture, discussion, group activities, PowerPoint presentations, and videos designed to prepare students for state-required certification and emergency medical scenarios.

Essential Anatomy and Physiology for HLHS 102 (Saladin – Ivy Tech Dual Credit Selection)
Topics Covered: Reproductive medical terminology; anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems; fertilization, pregnancy, and childbirth; and diseases and disorders affecting reproductive health, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Students also learn medical terminology, diagnostic procedures, and treatment approaches associated with the reproductive system, as well as the roles of healthcare professionals such as obstetricians and gynecologists. Instruction includes age-appropriate discussion of human growth and development and the prevention of reproductive system diseases.
Format: Lecture, discussion, group activity, video instruction, guest speakers, and digital materials using PowerPoint presentations, workbooks, and online learning tools. Lessons align with Ivy Tech dual credit standards and emphasize professional terminology, anatomy and physiology, and healthcare fundamentals related to reproductive health.

Indiana Department of Health 2023 CNA Curriculum, 7th Edition (2025) – Charlene Mantock, Suddith, Jesop, and Krinn (LAD)
Topics Covered: Instruction includes human growth and development, anatomy of the male and female reproductive and urinary systems, and discussions on abstinence and sexual behavior as part of health education. Lessons also address sexually transmitted infections and diseases (STIs/STDs), including causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment. Additional topics include patient care practices related to infection control, perineal care, bed baths, and behavioral health, emphasizing respect, consent, and professional standards when providing care.
Format: Instruction is delivered through PowerPoint presentations, videos, handouts, and photographs. Lessons utilize realistic mannequins, clay models, posters, and other visual aids to support understanding of anatomy and patient care. Group discussions and guided demonstrations help reinforce learning and proper healthcare techniques within a professional context.
Summary of Instructional Topics
Instruction related to human sexuality within Porter County Career & Technical Center programs is presented in a professional, medically accurate, and age-appropriate manner. The content is integrated into career and technical education courses to support student understanding of health, safety, anatomy, and human development as required within their state-approved curricula.
Topics addressed across these programs may include:
- Human reproductive anatomy and physiology, including the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems.
- Human growth and development, from prenatal stages through adulthood, including factors that influence physical, emotional, and social development.
- Prevention and treatment of diseases, infections, and conditions affecting the reproductive system, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and bloodborne pathogens.
- Health and safety practices, including infection control, hygiene, and patient care skills in medical and wellness settings.
- The importance of consent, healthy relationships, and respect for personal and professional boundaries.
- Abstinence education, presented as the expected standard outside of marriage in accordance with state requirements.
- Environmental, cultural, and social influences on growth, development, and health behaviors.
Instruction is taught within the context of each program’s professional focus (e.g., healthcare, education, or personal services) and emphasizes respect, safety, and responsibility.
PARENT/GUARDIAN CONSENT REQUIREMENT
Before a student participates in any instruction on human sexuality, parents or guardians will receive a written consent form that accurately summarizes the content of instruction.
The consent form will specify:
- Whether instruction is provided in a unified (co-ed) or separate setting
- The gender of the instructor
- Parent/guardian rights to review and inspect all related instructional materials
Consent may be submitted electronically through ParentSquare or Skyward Family Access.
If a parent or guardian declines instruction, the student will be provided with an alternative academic activity during that time. However, please note that if a student does not participate in this instruction, they may not be eligible to earn dual credit or program certification where the related content is required by college or state standards.
